Border-Lock® impression trays
We were given the assignment to make useful CAD files from existing metal models to enable moulds to be made, allowing the products to be produced from a specific kind of plastic. The project was for several series and lasted a couple of years.
Firstly, the products were 3D scanned. Then the trays were manually modelled on a computer based on the scan file. This way of working enabled us to find the optimum symmetry. The old models were not exactly symmetrical. The surfaces were designed for an optimal split-line in the mould. This was very important due to the use of slides in the mould.
It was this combination of complex 3D surfaces and slides that required extra attention. In spite of all the improvements, the model had to be as identical to the existing metal model as possible.
We milled a number of models for the customer to check and we took care of the construction of some moulds.
Thanks to the good teamwork between the customer, the producer, the mould maker and Tekenbureau Manders, this project, which was very intensive for all the participants, was very successful.
